Overview：DropBrigt® DL-MA is an aromatic α-hydroxy acid with the molecular formula C6H5CH(OH)CO2H. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and polar organic solvents.
The molecular weight of mandelic acid is approximately 152.1 Dalton, which is larger than that of other hydroxy acids (e.g., glycolic acid at 76.0 Dalton). This molecular weight allows mandelic acid to penetrate the skin more slowly, making it very gentle and suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
It serves as a useful precursor for various drugs. Mandelic acid has a long history of use in medicine as an antimicrobial agent, particularly in the treatment of urinary tract infections. The drugs cyclomandelate (a vasodilator with antispasmodic effects on vascular smooth muscle) and postatropine (a synthetic anticholinergic agent that blocks acetylcholine, used in ophthalmic examinations and refraction testing) are both mandelic acid esters.
